Choosing a reading

Ba Zi or I Ching?

One is a map of your whole life. The other is a compass for the decision in front of you. Here's how to know which you need.

We offer two readings: the Ba Zi Life Report and the I Ching Reading. The question we hear most often is simply, "Which one is right for me?" The answer comes down to one thing: do you want to understand the whole of who you are, or find direction on a single matter right now?

Ba Zi Life Report: the map of who you are

A Ba Zi reading uses your birth date and time to build a chart that is uniquely yours. It describes you as a person: your natural temperament, what you're good and not good at, the structure of your energy, and the broad rises and dips of the years ahead. If life is a journey, the Ba Zi report is the map. It tells you what the terrain looks like, what kind of roads your vehicle is built for, which stretches run smooth and which call for care.

Reach for it when:

  • You want to understand yourself fully, but can't yet name a specific question
  • You're at a turning point and want to see the road more clearly
  • You want insight into your career leanings, the way you love, or the focus of the next few years

I Ching Reading: the crossroads in front of you

An I Ching reading doesn't look at a whole life. It answers one specific question. When something is weighing on you, we cast a hexagram and interpret what it points toward for your situation. If Ba Zi is the map, the I Ching is the compass you hold when you're standing at a particular fork in the road. It won't narrate the whole journey, only which way this next step leans.

Reach for it when:

  • You face a clear decision (take the job, say how you feel, accept the deal)
  • You're torn between two or three options and want a calm outside view
  • The matter is time-sensitive, and you want to know whether to move now or wait

A simple way to decide

Ask yourself one thing: right now, am I trying to understand myself, or trying to resolve one matter?

They also work together

Many people start with a Ba Zi report to understand the big picture, their vehicle and the terrain it's built for. Then, when life brings them to a specific fork, they use the I Ching to ask about direction. One gives you long-term self-knowledge; the other gives you guidance in the moment. Read the map first, then use the compass.

Whichever you choose, our work is the same: helping you ask the question clearly, and handing you something you can actually see by.
